What Are Mood Disorders?

Mood disorders are conditions that affect your overall emotional state, often causing persistent sadness, irritability, or fluctuations between highs and lows. These changes can make it difficult to function day-to-day or maintain fulfilling relationships.

Common types of mood disorders treated at Uplift Family Psychiatry include:

  • Bipolar Disorder Characterized by periods of emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression).  Symptoms may include increased energy, impulsivity, irritability, or deep sadness. Each person’s experience is unique—some may have more anxiety or sleep issues than depression.

  • Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) A form of depression linked to reduced sunlight exposure, typically occurring in the fall and winter months. It often improves in spring and summer.

  • Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) A severe form of premenstrual syndrome that causes mood swings, irritability, or depression during the weeks leading up to menstruation. Some individuals experience symptoms for half of the month.

  • Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia) A chronic, long-term form of depression lasting two years or more. It’s marked by ongoing feelings of sadness, hopelessness, guilt, and low self-esteem.

When to Seek Help

If you or your child are struggling with persistent sadness, emotional instability, or mood swings that interfere with work, school, or relationships, it may be time to seek professional support. You should also reach out if you find yourself using alcohol or drugs to cope.

If you or someone you know is experiencing suicidal thoughts or thoughts of self-harm, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency department immediately.

At Uplift Family Psychiatry, we provide thorough online evaluations to understand the underlying factors affecting your mood and create a customized treatment plan to help you feel like yourself again.
